Electric Vehicle Charging Station Levels

Level One EV Chargers

Level One charging uses a 120-voltage current. This is the same voltage in standard household outlets and charges at a rate of 5 miles per hour. The 120-volt cord is usually supplied with the purchase of most electric vehicles. Level One chargers are typically the most inexpensive to install, however, they are the slowest to charge. An outlet used for EV charging that is shared with other outlets can often cause the circuit breaker to trip. EV chargers should have their own outlet, which alleviates the loss of time from a tripped circuit. It also prevents possible damage to equipment circuitry.

Level Two EV Chargers

Level Two charging uses 240-voltage current for faster charging. This is the same voltage that electric stoves and electric dryers use and will charge at a rate of 20-60 miles per hour. Level Two chargers use a higher voltage power which introduces a higher risk factor and only experienced professionals should service them. Installation cost is higher than Level One, but they charge much faster and are far more convenient. Level Two chargers are the most popular option for nearly all residential customers.

Level Two chargers come in the 30 amp and 50 amp variety. 50 amp outlets charge faster than 30 amp and can be appreciated by frequent travelers. Here at Wave Electric Company, we install two versions: copper and aluminum. Copper Level Two chargers offer more reliability and better performance, while the benefit of aluminum is a one-time cost savings.

Level Three EV Chargers

Level Three electric vehicle chargers are typically only installed at commercial properties due to the electrical infrastructure required.  They convert high-voltage power into DC power, which drastically cuts down the charging time. Different models have different requirements and restrictions. Installation and equipment are much costlier than Level One and Level Two.

Regular DC Fast Charging provided by Level Three is not recommended by manufacturers because it can put unnecessary strain on your electrical system and prematurely wear out your EV’s battery. Drivers should use these styles of chargers as infrequently as possible, and reserve their use only when necessary for travel.

Rebates Available For Home Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Federal EV charger tax credits: The federal government offers a tax credit of up to $1,000 for homeowners who install EV charging stations. To qualify, the charging station must be in a location that is a primary residence to charge a plug-in electric drive motor vehicle. This is referred to as the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit.

State EV charger tax credits: Many states offer additional incentives for EV charging stations, such as rebates and grants. In New Jersey, homeowners can receive up to $250 towards the cost of purchasing and installing a Level 2 EV charging station.
